Service Learning Projects

How did you prepared for this project? Explain.

I prepare for this project by doing the Hour of Code on Code.org on my own, after hearing that teaching Hour of Code to a student will be our Project Based Learning. I chose to do “Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code” in JavaScript. This game felt like it was a combination of Scratch, which I learn it in 10th grade and it was easy to use, and JavaScript.  It give me an idea of the whole point of Hour of Code. It prepare me to I know what to do, when teaching the person, if the person is confuse so that I could help them out.

How was your experience before, during, and after this project? From beginning to end.

My experience before the project was that I already knew about Hour of Code since 10th grade where I did one project, “Lightbot”, which I felt it was easy. This year as for our Project Based Learning, we needed to teach others students at our school Hour of Code. To feel ready for that project, we were told to practice Hour of Code, so that we know what is like and what is about, so that we know what to do to prepare when the day we teach a student. My experience during the project was easy because I felt prepare in what to do if the student doesn’t know what to do or ask any questions. During the project, the student knida of struggle a bit so I help the student out, and the student was able to complete the lesson, and got a certificate for completing Hour of Code. My experience after the project was that I felt happy to help a student in getting to know about Hour of Code because it may gave that student interest in Computer Science.

What did you learn? How do you better understand working and teaching others? Explain.

I learn what Hour of Code is about and what a project that you can chose from would be like, so that I feel fully prepare when teaching a student. Also, I learn to feel confidence in working and teaching others Hour of Code. I got a better understanding when working and teaching others by being fully prepare for this project because knowing what to do or practice to get an idea of the project made me feel confidence in myself and make it easier for me to work and teach the student Hour of Code. Also, I got a better understanding when working and teaching others by communication, which is one thing needed in this projects, because I gained confidence to teach the student Hour of Code and talk to them when they need help.

What was easy, hard, explain why?

It was mostly easy because I fully prepare by doing one project in Hour of Code at Code.org, which give me an idea of what is it going to be like and what is it about. Also it was easy because the game the person chose, and the game I practice, involve a combination of Scratch and Javascript. I learn Scratch in 10th grade, so when seeing it in Hour of Code felt it made the whole project a lot easier. Also I learn Javascript in 10th and 11th grade, so I gain a lot of experience with Javascript, from Code Avengers, and seeing it in the game made sense to me making it easy to me to explain it to the student.

How that this project benefits our community? Explain.

This project benefits our community by getting people into Computer Science. Since technology are surrounded us everywhere and it is evolve a lot, this give people an idea of an example of how technology, for example a game, works. Getting people involved with Hour of Code, may get a lot of people interested in Computer Science, liking coding, to help make the world a better place. Also, may get people interested in Computer Science to help people in need.
